CHUM is looking for your help again this year to fill backpacks with school supplies for kids. The thinking is, when kids have the supplies and are ready for school without the stress it puts on parents and familes that can't afford it, the kids are more open to learning. They feel a pride in themselves.

CHUM is collecting donations, backpacks, and school supplies from now through August 25th. Families with limited resources will be provided school supplies and backpacks at this event. Close to 900 backpacks were distributed in 2014, and CHUM says this year will be even more.

You can donate $15 for a backpack and/or money to fill it with the necessary supplies.

Here is the breakdown for cost of the items.

For the kindergarten to fifth grade group, an $18 donation will fill a backpack with: 3 wide ruled notebooks, a pair of scissors, 6 pencils, a box of markers, a box of crayons, 2 glue sticks, and 3 pocket folders, or you are welcome to buy a back pack and fill it with those items yourself.

For the sixth to twelfth grade group, a $20 donation will fill a backpack with: 6 pencils, 3 pens, a 3-ring binder, 3 college ruled notebooks, a pack of college ruled loose leaf paper, and 3 pocket folders, or you are welcome to buy a back pack and fill it with those items yourself.

To ensure fairness to all students, the public is asked to fill all backpacks the same with the items listed above.

Cash donations can also be made online here. There are different increments and an explanation of what your money buys.

If you wish to purchase a backpack and/or supplies, they can be brought to the CHUM Food Shelf by August 19, at 120 N. First Avenue West between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on weekdays (call ahead to 218-727-2391 if you need to schedule a different time).
