Haines Road + Piedmont Avenue Project In Duluth Could Change Lane Configuration
A project for sections of Haines Road and Piedmont Avenue is scheduled for next summer's road construction season. The scope of the work will bring a variety of different improvements to the busy area. However, there is one that might be very noticeable to drivers.
According to details shared by St. Louis County, a land configuration change is being proposed for a section of Haines Road - between Morris Thomas and Maple Grove Roads. Right now, that stretch of Haines Road included two driving lanes and two parking lanes; each of these lanes are twelve-feet wide. Proposed project details would see a lane configuration that would leave that stretch with three driving lanes and two parking lanes of varying widths. That set up would see the two outside driving lanes being used for through traffic, and the added middle driving lane would be used as a continuous two-way left turn lane.
Along with the changes in lane configuration for that stretch of Haines Road, work crews from the county would resurface a number of roadways in that area. Resurfacing is scheduled for Haines Road between Morris Thomas Road and Airport Road, and Piedmont Avenue between Haines Road and Chambersburg Avenue.
In addition to the resurfaced areas, crews would make numerous intersection safety improvements. Included as part of that work would be traffic signal upgrades, pedestrian crosswalks, and curb cuts for accessibility.
To provide details about the scheduled work, answer questions, and solicit commentary, St. Louis County Public Works has scheduled a public meeting. That meeting will happen on Wednesday, June 15 at 6:00 PM in a virtual manner. People who are interested in taking part will find links and all of the necessary information on the project page for the work on the county website.
According to St. Louis County Public Works, the project will happen during the 2023 summer road construction season. No road closures are anticipated for the work zone.
