We all know the folklore: if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow on Groundhog Day, it means we are in for a long winter. If he doesn't, it means we are due for an early spring.

In case you missed him making the big prediction just the other day, I will fill you in: he did NOT see his shadow, which means spring is coming sooner than we think - if you believe the myth.

So how does this line up with the Old Farmer's Almanac and their predictions for the month of February? Not very well. According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, February will shape up as follows:

  • From the 1st of the month through the 6th, we will see periods of snow and very cold temperatures.
  • From the 7th through the 15th, snow showers are in the forecast but with milder temperatures than the week before.
  • We can expect snowy conditions with mild temperatures in the eastern half of the forecast region and a cold snap in the west from February 16th to the 19th.
  • From the 20th through the 29th, we will see snow showers and bitterly cold temperatures.

This certainly doesn't signal an early spring as Phil would like us to believe. The first official day of the new season isn't until March but if he predicts we are in for an early one, that would probably mean we wouldn't have so much snow in store for the month ahead, right?

I guess time will tell!
