Free Financial Aid Help For Wisconsin-Bound College Students
Let's face it - college can be expensive. But the end results and increased potential for earnings can make it totally worth it. To help with the financial costs associated with attending college, local officials - working as part of the state-wide College Goal Wisconsin - will offer free financial aid help to students looking to attend one of the state's colleges or universities.
Local financial aid experts from the University of Wisconsin-Superior will provide their assistance to students on Wednesday, October 26, starting at 6:00 PM at Swenson Hall on the UWS campus. If you live in Wisconsin, you're eligible to take part.
The goal of the free sessions is to help individuals fill out their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the upcoming 2022-2023 school year. "The federal government requires ....[a completed] FAFSA from all students seeking financial aid, including loans and grants, to help pay for college".
According to an article in the Superior Telegram, "College Goal Wisconsin is part of a nationwide effort by financial aid professionals to help prospective college students of all ages fill out and submit the FAFSA". Additional information about the program and the process is available on the College Goal Wisconsin website.
What do you need to bring? Here are the necessary items needed to complete the FAFSA:
- 2020 Federal Tax Return and W2's
- 2020 Untaxed Income Records - such as child support or veterans non-education benefits
- Information on savings, investments, business assets, and farm assets (if applicable)
- Driver's License (if you have one)
- Cell phone (if you have one)
- Social Security Number
- Alien Registration Card or Permanent Resident Card - if you are not a United States citizen
- Date of birth for your parents
- Month and year of parents' marriage, divorce, or separation
The Financial aid experts who will be on hand to work with students to fill out their form strongly suggest that "a dependent student attends the event with a parent so the FAFSA can be submitted that evening".
