Former Vikings Head Coach Mike Zimmer Spotted at NFL Training Camp
After being fired by the Minnesota Vikings, former Head Coach Mike Zimmer has not spoken to the media and has rarely been seen, until this weekend when he was spotted on the sidelines of an NFL training camp.
Zimmer and his boss Rick Spielman were let go after a disappointing end to last season where the team missed the playoffs and finished with a losing record for the second year. The team quickly replaced the veterans with two young, fairly unproven hires in Kwesi Adofo-Mensah as General Manager and Kevin O'Connell as the new Head Coach.
The Vikings have been having a good training camp at TCO Performance Center by all accounts, and expectations are high for the team going into the upcoming season, and there has been no sign of Zimmer around Minnesota, but he was in Ohio over the weekend.
Zimmer was spotted on the sidelines of the Cincinnati Bengals training camp on Sunday, August 7th talking to several coaches and throwing up compliments to players. Zimmer was not there in any working capacity though, it was just a visit to a former team that he was the Defenfenisve Coordinator of from 2008-2013, and to visit his son Adam who currently works as an offensive consultant for the Bengals.
The radio voice of the Bengals, Dan Hoard, made the observation that Zimmer praised defensive end Sam Hubbard for his hard play, former Bengal Dave Lapham said "Zim doesn’t just throw out those big bouquet compliments.”
Zimmer looks happy and relaxed, as he should be, he's still getting a paycheck from the Vikings and will no doubt be able to get back into the NFL at any time of his choosing, and that may be never, but I doubt it, he loves the game and there is no way he'd be good on TV or radio as a broadcaster, no one wants to hear his crabby takes all game, so I suspect he'll be back working in the NFL again next season.
