FDA Updates Growing List Of Hand Sanitizers That Contain Methanol
The FDA continues to update a growing list of potentially deadly hand sanitizers that contain methanol, including a brand produced in the United States.
There are currently more than 75 different hand sanitizer products to avoid, according to the FDA, and while most of them are produced in Mexico there is one that originates in Tennessee.
On July 24, the following hand sanitizer manufacturers and their related products were added to the list:
- Herbacil Antiseptic Hand Sanitizer 70% Alcohol. Manufactured by Broncolin SA de CV (Mexico) and distributed by INBC Trading LLC.
- Herbacil Antiseptic Hand Sanitizer 70% Alcohol. Manufactured by Broncolin, SA de CV (Mexico) and distributed by INBC Trading LLC.

The FDA says when identifying hand sanitizers from the FDA’s do-not-use list, consumers should look for one or more identifiers from the list that match the product’s labeling, including:
- Manufacturer name
- Product name
- National Drug Code (NDC) number
Methanol in hand sanitizer products can be extremely dangerous.
Exposure can result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death. Although people using these products on their hands are at risk for methanol poisoning, young children who ingest these products and adolescents and adults who drink these products as an alcohol (ethanol) substitute are most at risk.
If you fear you have been exposed to a hand sanitizer containing methanol and you are experiencing symptoms, you should seek immediate medical treatment for potential reversal of the toxic effects of methanol poisoning.
Due to the pandemic, random hand sanitizer brands have been popping up online an even roadside stands. It is important to scrutinize what it is you're buying and where it is produced.
