Duluth's Second Harvest Northern Food Bank delivered more food in 2019 than ever before. Last year alone, the food bank delivered 5.1 million meals. The organizers of the food bank say they are very proud of the work they've done, but it's also bittersweet because they haven't been able to end hunger in The Northland.

Second Harvest Northern Food Bank is the regions only foodbank. They serve roughly 44,000 people in St. Louis, Carlton, Lake, and Cook Counties. They receive donations from 180 programs in the Northland and distribute the food to those in need. The food bank began back in 1984 after layoffs on the Iron Range mines crippled the region.

Volunteers are the driving force behind Second Harvest, and this year they hit a record 16,072 hours of volunteering.

Last year, Second Harvest had another high volume year in donated meals with 4.9 million.
