In a thriller of a game that needed extra frames, Section 7AA top seed Elk River and number 3 seed Duluth East met at Amsoil Arena Thursday night to compete for the section title and to earn a trip to the 2015 Minnesota Boys Hockey Tournament at the Xcel Energy Center next week.

Mr. Hockey finalist Jacob Jaremko found the net twice as Elk River took a 3-0 lead on Duluth East by the end of the first period.

Ash Altmann and Nick Altmann each took advantage of power play opportunities for the Greyhounds to cut Elk River's lead to 1 in the second period. Nick Funk followed with an even strength goal for East to tie the game before Reggie Lutz gave Elk River a 4-3 lead coming out of the second period.

Hounds junior Ryan Peterson scored at the 12:44 mark in the third period to tie the game and eventually force overtime. This marked the second time this season these two teams would play an overtime game against each other, having skated to an overtime tie in January.

After a scoreless first overtime period, freshman Garret Worth found the net for Duluth East to break the tie and give the Greyhounds a 5-4 win. Hounds goaltender Gunnar Howg tallied 25 saves off 29 shots through the game, helping East to the win.

The win earns Duluth East their 7th straight trip to the Minnesota Boys Hockey tournament, continuing a streak that started in 2009. The Greyhounds will find out this weekend who they play in the first game of the tournament when the Class AA bracket is released.
