The new school year will start sooner than you think;  while many look forward to adventure of the season, others look to back-to-school time with trepidation.  Many families in the Northland have a difficult time making ends meet all year long - but especially when clothes and supply shopping stretch their budget.

CHUM is looking to change that by organizing a backpack and school supply collection.  According to officials with the agency, participation can take many forms.  Scott Van Deale - CHUM's Distributive Services Director expands:

You can purchase backpacks and the supplies we are requesting and bring them to the CHUM Food Shelf at 120 North 1st Avenue West, between 9 AM and 1 PM Monday through Friday.  Another way to donate to this cause is to go to the CHUM website and click on the backpack to order a backpack and school supplies for $7.32, which be shipped directly to CHUM. Finally, you can send a check to CHUM with Backpacks written in the memo to CHUM.

Items requested for the campaign include:

  • Wide-ruled notebooks
  • College-ruled notebooks
  • College-ruled loose lead paper
  • Pocket folders
  • Crayon boxes
  • Colored pencils
  • Backpacks

Closer to the end of summer, CHUM will host a Back To School Fair with the Union Gospel Mission and the Duluth Public Schools on August 31; families will be able to receive the backpacks and school supplies they need.
