Drivers who utilize Interstate 35 in Carlton and St Louis Counties will want to be aware of a road construction project that starts Monday, August 25.

Motorists may encounter lane restrictions on I-35 as a cable median barrier project begins in Carlton and St. Louis Counties. The project is scheduled to be completed in mid-Oct.

The work will take place in the freeway median, however the left lane will be closed daily near work sites to allow for movement of equipment and workers. The right lane will remain open. The single lane sections will be up-to 2 miles in length.

  • Northbound: The single lane closures will be in effect from 6 a.m. Mondays – noon Fridays.
  • Southbound: The single lane closures will be in effect from 6 a.m. Mondays – 7 p.m. Fridays.

All lanes will be open on weekends.

Nine miles of cable median barrier will be installed.

The speed limit will be 55 mph in the single lane sections. Minimal motorist delays are anticipated.

Cable median barriers can reduce fatal crashes by 90 percent. There is no other safety device available that virtually guarantees consistent success in saving lives every year on the interstate system.
