Last night we hosted Sunday dinner for my wife's side of the family. I decided that I would make my "famous in our house" chili. It's been a recipe that I've been stewing up for about 20 years. It has changed a little bit over the years as I have tweaked it along the way. I'm partially open to suggestion and trying new things, but I never would have imagined that people put peanut butter cups in their chili.

That's precisely what my sister in law told me to do. I thought for sure she was pulling my leg or playing an early April Fool's joke. She said all you do is put one Reese's Peanut Butter Cup in the chili as it simmers and it will "bring your chili to the next level.

So, after much hesitation I decided to try it. Sure enough, the chili was brought to the next level. You don't taste the chocolate and peanut butter, but it does give the chili a little more depth and balance. When making a tomato based soup or marina sauce, you add sugar to counter the tartness. I think this is kind along the same lines as that, and it was a nice touch. My chili never has tasted so good.

So if you're looking to take your chili to the next level, try a peanut butter cup. I swear I'm not making a fool of you, and would never want to ruin hours of cooking chili. It's worth a shot.
