If you're serious about ice fishing and have a shelter (usually referred to as an Ice Fishing House) on the lake, you'll need to know about two approaching dates.

The deadline dates to have these shelters removed from waterways is largely determined by geography.  That line runs west to east along US Highway 10 starting at the Minnesota-North Dakota border, then east along Highway 34 to Minnesota Highway 200, east along Highway 200 to US Highway 2, and east along Highway 2 to the Minnesota-Wisconsin border.  The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has established this line based on many factors - most of which center around average historical temperatures.

  • If you live SOUTH of this line, you need to have your ice fishing house off the lake no later than 11:59 PM on Monday, March 2.
  • If you live NORTH of this line, you need to have your ice fishing house off the lake no later than 11:59 PM on Monday, March 16.

There are a few exceptions for the areas that lie near the Canadian border, and those details can be found on the MN DNR website.
