UPDATE: Representatives from Beargrease report that through donations of cash and straw they have it covered of what was stolen, thanks to a huge response from the public!

Someone or more likely a group of people actually went onto someones private property and stole ALL the straw they had. This was no ordinary straw mind you, this was set aside for the dogs to rest on during the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon.

According to WDIO the straw was being stored at a farm in Cook Minnesota when Beargrease Organizers got a phone call saying all the straw had been stolen. They usually order around 200 bales, and they estimate it will cost them around $2,000 to replace.

Beargrease spokesperson Monica Hendrickson said "It's just more expensive for us because it's at a premium this year. We always reserve our straw in September, and so our farmer was holding it for us. And it's all gone. The dogs need it to keep dry and to keep warm. They're running 300 miles, It's one of the most important things that we have for the race.Because the dogs are endurance athletes, they are very particular about what kind of straw they get and where it is stored."

Now they will have to source it from a more expensive place for the 2020 race. If you would like to help please go to The Beargrease Donation Page.
