Hockey Day Minnesota 2016 came and went, delivering lots of hockey and memorable moments for everyone at Bayfront Festival Park. This year marked the 10th anniversary of the inception of this statewide celebration of the game of hockey. The visual setting was perfect, and the weather cooperated for the most part, outside of a little sun in the second game of the day leading to some slight ice challenges. Adding to the sights and sounds of the game, the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge sounded its horn each time a Duluth team scored a goal.

The first game of the day featured section rivals Eveleth-Gilbert and Duluth Denfeld. The visiting team tallied on the scoreboard first, but Denfeld tied things up early in the second period and held on to the momentum through the remainder of the game. The Hunters would go on to win 5-2 in their Hockey Day Minnesota appearance.

Game 2 of the day was a rematch of last year's Class AA State Championship, as Duluth East would look for revenge after Lakeville North beat the Greyhounds 4-1 at the Xcel Energy Center last March. East's Ryan Peterson gave the Greyhounds the early advantage, but despite the early advantage, Lakeville North would go on to win 3-2.
