It took longer this winter than most years but officials with Douglas County issued their seasonal Frozen Road Declaration - effective Thursday, January 21 at 12:01 AM.  The act allows for additional weight limits on restricted roads in the county until further notice.

According to the release by the county:

Eligibility for increased weight limitations is restricted to vehicles hauling peeled or unpeeled forest products cut crosswise not to include wood chips,or abrasives or salt for highway winter maintenance. For legally licensed vehicles hauling these loads, no special permit is required during this period. Legally licensed means currently registered for 80,000 pounds, or the maximum gross vehicle weight, if less than 80,000 pounds. The gross weight imposed on the highway by the wheels of any one axle shall not exceed 23,000 pounds, or for two axles less than seven feet apart, 38,000 pounds, or for groups of three consecutive axles not less than 9 feet or more than 13 feet apart, a weight of 12,000 pounds more than permitted in Section 348.15(3)(C), stats. This 12,000 lbs. includes the 4,000 lbs. provided for in Section 348.15(3)(br), stats.
This years action comes almost a month later than the average announcement date.  Most winters, Douglas County issues this notice around December 22.  The average date that the declaration is rescinded is March 4.
