May 23 will be the day 100-year-old pipes are removed as part of the phase 1 Superior Street Reconstruction.

According to a press release from the city of Duluth, the removal of the existing District Steam Heating System within the limits of Phase 1 of the Superior Street Reconstruction Project involves the mitigation and removal of the existing asbestos-containing steam pipes that have been serving Downtown Duluth for over 100 years.

Obviously, the removal will be performed by a licensed asbestos abatement contractor and environmental monitoring will be performed to ensure worker and public safety.

Signs will be placed at the location of the work site to inform the public that asbestos abatement is occurring and to delineate the work zone. Public cooperation in staying within the designated pedestrian areas and out of the delineated work zone is greatly appreciated. Access to businesses will be maintained while this work is performed.
