Heads up if you're heading out near Wisconsin Point in Superior:  One of the roads off of Moccasin Mike Road will temporarily close starting on or about April 15.

The road will be closed to protect piper plovers - who often nest in the area.

The Common Council, the Douglas County board of Supervisors, and the University of Wisconsin-Superior have agreed to restrict access to Schafer's Beach and Dutchman's Creek during the nesting season.

The closure is expected to last about 8 weeks, however if an actual nest is found that date could be extended to August 15.

Mary Morgan - Director of Parks, Recreation, and Forestry for the City of Superior - says that even though this road will be closed temporarily, the general public can still access almost three miles of beach on Lake Superior from the 22 parking turn-outs located along Wisconsin Point Road.
