How hard is it to understand how a drive-through bank works?

From time to time, I have reason to go to two different banks in the area - often, utilizing the drive-through lanes when I do.  Usually, it's the same situation no matter which bank I go to:  No matter how many lanes are open, MOST of the cars are lined up in the first or second lane -- leaving the others empty. There they sit -- people waiting four...five...sometimes six cars deep for their turn, while the other lanes sit open.

So what do I do?  I pull right in to the open lane, and get waited on immediately.

That's when the stares start.  I finish my transaction and drive away, leaving a bunch of people giving me dirty looks, while they  sit in their idling vehicle - waiting.   What am I doing wrong?  Isn't that why they have mul

tiple lanes -- so that the wait-time is spread out and the tellers can maximize their efforts?

So - tell the truth.  Do you wait in the first line...or do you use the drive-through the way it was designed to be used?
