Velvet Ice Cream-Brand Recalled Over Listeria Concerns
A large-scale voluntary recall has been issued by the Velvet Ice Cream company - including all of their ice cream and sherbet products made on or after March 24, 2021 due to listeria concerns. The issue was discovered by routine testing that is carried out in the plant on a regular basis.
According to details released by the United States Food and Drug Administration, the voluntary recall includes a variety of different brands made and packaged by the company - including Velvet, Buehler's, Discount Drug Mart, North Star, Whale Of A Pail, Ruggle's, and Super Dip. The full list of affected product codes and item descriptions can be found on the FDA's website - available by clicking here. Consumers will find the product codes on the bottom or side of the container.
While no medical issues have been reported in conjunction with this recall at this time, listeria monocytogenes contamination can be serious. The Food and Drug Administration shares:
"Although health individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nauseam abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women."
Customers who believe that they have the affected product in their possession are urged not to consume it. Velvet Ice Cream is directing people to dispose of it immediately or return it to the place of purchase for a refund. Consumers with questions can call the Velvet Ice Cream customer support hotline at 800-589-5000 X237 between the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. There are also details available on their website.
