The Superior Spartans take off for state today (Wednesday) in Madison, WI. The Spartans will be making their 35th state tournament appearance in Madison.

They are 18–7–1 on the year and have made 11 trips to state in their last 12 years.

The Spartans will face Fond du Lac on Thursday night at 8pm; a team they already faced and beat earlier this year.

Tuesday was their final home practice for the season at Wessman Arena and the team is excited to represent Superior this week.

Head Coach Jason Kalin said, “Our expectations are good.  We are young but they never cease to amaze me all season long.  We have had some good games; we have had some poor games.”

The Hayward/Spooner girl’s hockey team is also at state.  The will play University School at 2:15pm Friday afternoon in Madison.  The Hurricanes are 20-4-1 overall this year.

 

Track Honors

The NSIC Indoor Track and field athlete of the year was announced today and the award goes to UMD's Chanel Miller.

She won the Indoor title for the Bulldogs in the Pentathlon at the NSIC Indoor track and field championships. Her, 3,798 points is the 2nd highest in the NCAA this year.

The sophomore from Burnsville will compete at nationals next week in the pentathlon and long jumps. She was the NSIC Newcomer of the year for Outdoor track and field a year ago.

 

Hockey Honors

The WCHA has honored UMD's Bridgett Lacquette as the WCHA Offensive Player of the week.  She had two goals and two assists as UMD split with North Dakota over the weekend.

She scored a goal on Friday and another in the shootout win on Saturday.

UMD will host Ohio State this weekend in the WCHA playoffs at Amsoil Arena in a best two of three series.

 

Hoops Upset

Number one ranked Indiana was upset at Minnesota at Williams Arena on Tuesday night in men’s college basketball.

The Big Ten leader beat the Gophers in the first meeting this year at home.  Indiana was 24-3 going into the game and had won four straight before falling on Tuesday night.

The Hoosiers led by 4 at the break, 34-30. Minnesota wins 77-73.  Trevor Mbakwe with 21 points and 12 rebounds.  Jordan Hulls had 17 for Indiana.

Badgers won 77-46 over Nebraska.  Sam Dekker had 19 points.
