In a year that seemed to take one casualty after another, 2016 claimed one more local victim on the last day of the year as a Superior landmark shut it's doors for the last time.  After 23 years in business, O'Neill's Pub and Liquor closed for good on December 31.

In a statement on their Facebook page, O'Neill's thanked their customers for their patronage and their friendship. They also marked the occasion on their outdoor sign with the phrase "Thanks for the memories".

The family-owned establishment first opened its doors in the early 1990's in the Mid-Town Plaza, next to the Jubilee Foods store that was open there at the time.  Later - after Jubilee closed its doors, O'Neill's moved its business a block or so south on Tower Avenue to the building that was formerly a Wendy's. It was in that location that they expanded their off-sale selection - utilizing the drive-through window left behind from the fast food restaurant as a unique part of their liquor store.

The shuttering of O'Neill's Pub and Liquor leaves another empty building in the stretch of Tower Avenue that also saw Target and Kmart close in 2016.
