Northland Events Tied To National Mental Health Awareness Month
It's said that there are three important - but simple truths about mental illness: "It's okay to have mental illness", "it's okay to talk about mental illness", and "it's okay to get help with mental illness". The number of people who have a mental illness or know someone who does is quite large.
May is National Mental Health Awareness Month. To coordinate efforts to help shine the spotlight on the illness, a variety of programs and special events have been planned across the country.
For the second year in a row, Northland Healthy Minds has scheduled local events to raise awareness of mental health resources. Here are some of the larger events planned for May 2019:
- May 2: An art exhibit opening "What Mental Illness Feels Like" will be held from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Zeitgeist. The art will remain on display through May 15.
- May 7: Documentary screenings of Call Me Mental - followed by discussion - will be held from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Zeitgeist. Six short documentaries will be shown before the conversation.
- May 9: Wear Green Day. Nortlanders are invited to wear green on this day to show their support. In addition, Enger Tower will be lit green in the evening.
- May 14: A free community dinner and mental health resource fair will be held at Denfeld High School starting at 5:30 PM.
- FRIDAYS in May: Are Free Fridays at the Duluth YMCA. The Duluth YMCA is offering free use of their facilities every Friday in May - except May 24.
