Living in the Twin Ports, it's nearly-impossible to overlook the fact that a lot of freight travels through our area - whether by road, rail, or sail.  To coordinate the movement of that freight, officials with the Minnesota Department of Transportation work with other transportation agencies to develop a Freight Plan.

The Freight Plan for District 1 of the state (which covers the region we live in) will be presented at a public meeting scheduled for Wednesday, September 4 at the MNDOT Headquarters on Mesaba Avenue.  From 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, attendees will have the opportunity to investigate plans and make their comments and opinions known.  The meeting will start with a short presentation at 2:00 PM, followed by an open house-style setting.

MNDOT's District 1 covers almost a quarter of Minnesota's land area.  The district is comprised of 8 counties:  Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake, Pine, and St. Louis.  Included in the district are a number of major state highway systems - including Interstate 35, Highway 2, Highway 53, and Highway 169.  In addition, there are major rail lines that are owned and operated by the Canadian National and Burlington Northern Santa Fe.  Also - District 1 is home to three different ports:  Duluth, Two Harbors, and Silver Bay.
