Minnesota Sheriff: Be Wary Of Scammers Posing As The SSA
You'd think scammers would run out of ideas at this point but it seems not. Another scam has been reported in Minnesota, this time in Stevens County.
The Stevens County Minnesota Sheriff's Office warned residents about this scam on their Facebook page (September 10th), writing that the scam had been reported several times in the area. Here's how the scam works, according to their post:
The Stevens County Sheriff’s Office has recently received several reports of social security scam phone calls. The callers are claiming to be from the Social Security Administration and try to convince people that their social security number has been used fraudulently, or the number has been discovered at the scene of a crime. The caller tries to convince people that they could be charged with a crime if they do not cooperate by providing personal information, such as their social security number, address, date of birth, and credit card numbers.
The Stevens County Minnesota Sheriff's Office also reminds everyone to be cautious when it comes to any type of Social Security Scam, as the SSA will never reach out to you and ask for your personal information. They also won't call and ask you questions or threaten you in any way.
As always, do not give out your personal information to anyone over the phone or the internet. Always take the extra minute or two to do some research on an organization to avoid becoming a victim of a scam like this.
Just the other day, another sheriff's office in Minnesota warned of a similar scam which revolved around people posing as an employee of the USPS.
