May 5th 2022 Brings One Of Latest Sixty Degree Days To Duluth

It seems safe to finally say that spring is here and here to stay! We have finally seen sunshine and warm temperatures in the Northland for the most part.

The Old Farmer's Almanac released their predictions for the month ahead and said it would be a warmer-than-average month for our region with thunderstorms off and on. We have to take that forecast with a grain of salt but here's to hoping it comes true.

The National Weather Service of Duluth also weighed in but sadly, they had a different forecast for our area. According to their outlook, it will be another "chilly" month for the Twin Ports. While it won't be super cold it definitely won't be feeling like summertime. Sigh.

After the cold and snowy April we saw, I was hoping for some warm weather. At least it won't be as bad as last month, where we went an entire month without seeing a dry Wednesday. April in Duluth was also super gloomy, with a majority of the month bringing wet and dark conditions.

Things seem to be on the up and up though. This was evident with a fun little statistic WDIO Meteorologist Brandon Weathers shared on his Facebook page Friday (May 6th). This fact comes with both a positive and a negative.

According to his post, some parts of Duluth finally reached the sixty-degree mark! Some spots in the Duluth area did not but the weather station at the Duluth International Airport did indeed record a sixty.

The National Weather Service of Duluth shared photo evidence of this milestone on their Twitter account as it happened. What a beautiful sight to see. Ha!

The bad news? It was one of the latest dates that Duluth has hit sixty degrees in the record books! In fact, it was the seventh latest date that we've hit the sixties in Duluth history. To put this into perspective, consider the fact that we usually hit the sixties by mid-April.

A record like this hasn't been hit in some time! The closest time we saw a record like this was in 1996 - over two decades ago. Yikes. At least things are warming up so we will take it.

Some more good news is that the National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center just released a summertime outlook. The outlook for our region says that while it will be dry, we can expect warmer-than-average temperatures this summer.

I know we will all be out enjoying every single second of it after our miserable winter. Drought conditions may get severe again like summertime last year but hopefully, it doesn't get that extreme.
