The Kinks Reveal ‘Muswell Hillbillies’ Reissue Details
The Kinks's 1971 'Muswell Hillbillies' album was a critical success, but a commercial flop. The album -- their ninth -- will be reissued this fall with an abundance of bonus tracks. The original album included 12 songs; the reissue will contain 25.
Rolling Stone once called 'Muswell Hillbillies' Ray Davies' signature songwriting effort. But the album failed to chart in the U.K. and barely made a dent in the U.S. '20th Century Man,' the album's only single, didn't even make it into the Billboard Hot 100.
Still, longtime fans appreciated what Davies and his bandmates were attempting on 'Muswell Hillbillies,' with most of the songs centering on themes of working-class life.
According to our new buddies at The Second Disc, the upcoming Sanctuary Records reissue will include two previously released bonus tracks and 11 odds and ends from the era, like demos, remixes and live tracks. Two additional versions of '20th Century Man' are among the 13 bonus cuts.
The reissue will be available on Oct. 7 in the U.K. and on Oct. 15 in the U.S. According to a listing on Amazon, the CD version goes for $29.47. MP3, vinyl and audio cassette versions will also be available.
