Janis Joplin Is Broadway Bound
The Great White Way will be getting some cheap thrills and a case of dem old kozmic blues this fall.
Vintage Vinyl News reports that 'A Night With Janis Joplin,' a musical tribute to the singer's life and times that's been playing on stages throughout the nation for several years, is coming to Broadway starting Oct. 10, when the show is scheduled to have its official opening at the Lyceum Theatre. Calling Joplin "a must-see headliner from Monterey to Woodstock," the show's synopsis promises "a musical journey celebrating the inspirations of one of rock 'n' roll's greatest legends."
Written and directed by Randy Johnson, whose previous credits include a one-man show starring Mike Tyson, 'A Night With Janis Joplin' stars singer Mary Bridgit Davies, whose name should be familiar to hardcore Joplin fans; not only has she been with the production since 2011, she's also performed with Big Brother and the Holding Company and previously starred in another Joplin tribute, 'Love, Janis.'
Previews for 'A Night With Janis Joplin' are scheduled to begin at the Lyceum on Sept. 20, and tickets -- which range from $28 to $140 -- are on sale here. In the meantime, productions of the show are also set for engagements in Washington, D.C., Austin and San Jose, Calif. over the next several months.
