Epic Win: MN Mascots Crushing It In New National Contest
Minnesota may be known for its 10,000 Lakes, but these two high schools are becoming known for their mascots, as they've just advanced to the next round in a national mascot contest.
High school mascots have been around for a while, both here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes and across the country. The Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) says that while many school mascots were originally animals, today's school mascots often reflect local history, wildlife, industries, or cultural identity.
The Minnesota Post compiled a list of the five most common high school mascots in Minnesota:
- Eagles – A symbol of strength and freedom, adopted by numerous schools statewide.
- Tigers – Representing power and agility, commonly chosen for their fierce image.
- Panthers – Embodying stealth and strength, a popular choice among schools.
- Cardinals – Known for their vibrant color and regional presence.
- Cougars – Symbolizing speed and tenacity, favored for their dynamic representation.
But these two mascots, while not one of the five most common in the state, are now on their way to becoming some of the best in the entire country. That's because they just advanced to the next round of the West Region in the The64.com West Region High School Mascot tournament. The64.com is an interactive voting platform it says was created to celebrate the ‘Best Of’ through 'fun and competitive tournaments nationwide.'

According to a release, 'thousands of votes (and countless school spirit showdowns) have already taken place in the mascot tournament,' and now just 16 mascots remain standing-- and they include two schools from Minnesota.
Both the Otters from Fergus Falls High School in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, and the Northern Freeze, lead by Avalanche the Yeti from Marshall County Central High School in Newfolden, Minnesota, are both still competing for the right to move on to the next round of top 8 mascots in the The64.com West Region High School Mascot tournament.
Voting for the top 8 round is underway at The64.com and will run through May 2nd, 2025, with the final eight mascots set to be announced on May 3rd, followed by the next round of matchups, which all lead to the national championship.
So good luck, Otters and Northern Freeze! Here's hoping you make Minnesota proud by moving on to the next round of competition!
