UPDATE 10:16 pm 1/8/24

The Cloquet Police Department shared an update on the active shooter incident that left three people dead Monday night, including the shooter and two victims. The update provides what they say is a preliminary report of the situation.

Around 6:30 pm on Monday evening (January 8), an employee of the Cloquet Super 8 called 911 to report they had found another hotel employee who looked like she had been attacked.

Cloquet Police responded to the call, finding a 22-year-old woman with a gunshot wound. She was transported to St. Luke's Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

As officers investigated, they found a 35-year-old male victim in a car in the hotel parking lot. The man was deceased from a gunshot wound.

Officers later found a 32-year-old male outside, on the hotel property, who was deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A firearm was located next to him. Officers reviewed surveillance video from the hotel and confirmed that this deceased male was the suspect.

The department says the identities of the three deceased are not yet being released pending notification of the family.

Additional information will be shared on Tuesday as it is confirmed. Cloquet Police say a news conference will be held Tuesday at Cloquet City Hall, with the time of the conference to be announced in the morning.

Here's what we know so far:

UPDATE: 8:16 pm 1/8/24

Police in Cloquet issued an alert of an active shooter on Monday night, warning citizens in part of the city to shelter in place. An order that was lifted about an hour after being issued. Here's what happened.

The alert was issued around 7 pm Monday night, specifying the area near the intersection of Minnesota Highway 33 and Big Lake Road, which is on the western portion of Cloquet, near businesses like Super One, and L&M Fleet Supply.

Initial reports suggest the incident stemmed from the Super 8, located in the area of the red marker on the map above.

The department asked residents in the area to remain sheltered in place until further notice, with that notice coming just before 8 pm on Monday night.

In an update from the Cloquet Police Department, they say the area was secured, with one person found deceased. The department says they believe this person is the shooter.

While the department is not reporting any other deceased individuals right now from the incident, they did say in their report from earlier in the evening that there were "several victims" receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the incident.

While the shelter-in-place order has been canceled, the department's update continues to ask the public to stay away from the area. In a second update, they say there is still a large police presence in the area. Police on-scene do not believe there is still an active threat.

This is a developing story. We'll have more information as it becomes available.
