Duluth’s Newest Coffee Shop, Underwood Coffee, Just Opened

Fans have been watching, waiting, and wondering - when is Underwood Coffee opening its Duluth coffee shop?

While they're a bit off from their official grand opening, today is the day the Duluth coffee roasting company opened its shop to customers.

Underwood Coffee has been around Duluth for a while now, roasting coffee in the Lakeside neighborhood that can be found in several locations around the country, including in the Twin Ports area.

The company's beans can be found at places like Whole Foods Co-op, Goat Hill Marketplace, and Blue Heron Trading Company, and is also served at places like 190 Coffee and Tea, Duluth Grill, and Love Creamery.

It has been a long-standing dream for Underwood Coffee's owner, Jake, to open a coffee shop of his own. That dream is now being realized.

After announcing in 2025 that Underwood Coffee would be opening a shop on First Street in Downtown Duluth, work has been underway to turn the corner space in the Board of Trade Building into a coffee shop.

Some people have been playfully roasting the shop on social media about when they'd actually be opening. Earlier this year, the owner had hopes of being open in April or May, but as often happens with projects like these, unforeseen things can slow down the process.

The good news is that the wait is finally over, with the coffee shop opening its doors to the public today, with a menu of coffees, teas, and some baked goods awaiting customers during this soft opening.

On the coffee side of the menu are drip coffee, espresso, Americanos, lattes, capuccinos, cold brews, and some specialty drinks. When it comes to teas, there are iced and hot teas, herbal and specialty tea offerings.

I popped in and grabbed a beverage, asking if the new coffee shop would change anything with their Lakeside roasting facility. I was informed they'll continue their operations there as usual, with the coffee shop operation separate from the roasting facility.

While you can pop in to Underwood Coffee and enjoy a beverage and a snack, the team is still putting its finishing touches on the space. It won't hinder your experience in any way, but just know that there is still a little work to be done before the space is complete.

When that work is done, there will be two different seating areas to gather with friends or simply enjoy a coffee or tea.

While we're a bit away from an official grand opening (once that work is done that I mentioned), you can pop in any day of the week.

Underwood Coffee is open daily, with their hours being 7 am until 3 pm Monday-Saturday, and on Sundays, they're open 8 am to 2 pm.
