Democracy Meets Art: Wisconsin Town Launches ‘I Voted’ Sticker Contest

One of the highlights of voting is getting that sticker to proclaim to the world that you did your civic duty, this year, one Wisconsin town will be handing out a unique design to voters.

Generally, you get the bright red "I Voted" sticker, or some other basic, generic design when voting in a local or national election, that will change this year as one Wisconsin town is having a contest for the new design.

Engage in Democracy with Art

Superior, Wisconsin, announced that residents under the age of 18 can submit designs to be considered for the official "I Voted" sticker for the city for the upcoming November 5th election.

The city says that this is an "opportunity for creative young residents to engage in the democratic process through art." The contest is being organized by the City of Superior's Clerk's Office and entries will be accepted until Friday, September 27th.

Several winners and designs will be chosen and distributed during general election day, and the winners will get a prize and recognition at a city event featuring the winning artwork.

Design the Next "I Voted" Sticker

The submitted designs will need to fit on a 2-inch round sticker and must include the phrase "I Voted" somewhere in the design. All submissions must also include the artist's name, age, and contact information.

Entries can be submitted at the Superior Public Library or the City Clerk's Office, there are also design templates/entry forms available at these locations.

History of the "I Voted" Sticker

While the history of the "I Voted" sticker isn't completely known, it started to gain traction in the 1980s, and one of the most iconic sticker designs of a rippling flag next to the phrase was designed in 1987 by Janet Boudreau, she owned a voting supplies company and decided to spice up the stickers that were being used at the time.
