It's officially the end of an era for a Minnesota sports Hall of Famer.

Adam Thielen officially announced his retirement from the NFL today (January 14). Even though this was expected news, I'll admit it still feels like a bummer for me as a fan.

The NFL's official social media broke the news on Wednesday afternoon, sharing that Minnesota's own "AT-19" would be hanging up his cleats after 13 seasons in the league.

As I mentioned, this was expected, and the announcement was inevitable after his latest team, the Steelers, were eliminated from the NFL playoffs last weekend.

As I had shared prior to the start of the 2025 NFL season, Adam had been leaning toward retirement since May of 2025. His reunion with his hometown Minnesota Vikings via a trade with the Panthers ahead of the 2025 season seemed like a storybook ending for Thielen.

The Vikings were coming off a huge 2024 season, poised to make another return to the playoffs, and needing to shore up the wide receiver position with a multi-game suspension for Jordan Addison and some lingering injuries for others at the position.

The news that he was being traded back to Minnesota led to viral videos of raw excitement from his family, giving him a chance to retire (maybe even with a Super Bowl chance) with his hometown team, with which he played most of his career.

Sadly, that storybook finish never really came to fruition.

The Vikings' offense struggled mightily through a barely-over-.500 season, and Adam's production was limited to just 8 receptions for 69 yards through Week 12. He didn't play in the Week 13 shutout the Seahawks handed to the Vikings before asking to be released to "be allowed the opportunity to go compete elsewhere for the last few weeks of my career."

After hitting waivers, the Steelers picked him up, where he earned 11 receptions for 117 yards through the last five regular-season games. In addition, he got 2 receptions for 25 yards in the Steelers' playoff game.

Thielen shared a message on Instagram (via Adam Rapoport), saying the following:

"What a ride it has been! 13 years what a blessing! Have been blessed with so many great relationships and mentors over the years that I am forever grateful for! Thank you to everyone who has supported me through the years it has meant everything to my family and I!"

Adam's career concludes with a total stat line of 696 receptions for 8,428 yards and 64 touchdowns through his 13-year career. Of those 13 years, he spent over 10 and a half with his hometown Minnesota Vikings.

Joining the team in 2014 as an undrafted free agent, he ground it out largely as a special teams and backup player until starting to emerge in 2016, when he notched 967 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Adam's breakout season was 2017, when he earned 1.276 yards and 4 touchdowns, growing those numbers to 1,373 yards and 9 touchdowns in the 2018 season.

The Detroit Lakes, MN native and Minnesota State University, Mankato graduate earned two Pro Bowl appearances (2017, 2018) and a Second-Team All-Pro appearance in 2017. He also holds the record of most consecutive 100-yard receiving games to start a season with 8 games (2018 season).

As an undrafted free agent out of a Division II school, Adam had an incredible career, earning a spot among the best Minnesota-born pro athletes.

I am sure Adam's fans everywhere are curious as to what is next for him. Will he do something like join the Minnesota Vikings radio broadcast team? Will he just enjoy retirement? That remains unclear at this time.

Whatever is next, congratulations on an amazing career, Adam! You were a lot of fun to watch and cheer for over the years!

Inspiration For Vikings-themed Specialty License Plates

After the announcement the Minnesota Vikings would have specialty license plates available for Minnesota drivers, I thought it would be a good idea to offer some inspiration for custom things to put on your SKOL-themed plates.
