Some Breakfast Restaurants Are Starting To Charge Surcharge For Each Egg
Man, we just can't catch a break when eating out anymore. The prices are through the rough, tipping is out of control, and now we're getting hit with a massive egg shortage.
Egg Prices Surge
Seriously, have you seen the price of eggs lately? I'm not kidding, when I went to the grocery store the other day I went to buy a dozen eggs and it was over $7. If you break that down, it's like 58 cents per egg.
Waffle House announced they would be implementing a 50 cent surcharge on each egg ordered off the menu. It's because the prices have gone through the roof. But why?
Bird Flu + Panic Buying Causes Shortage
The avian flu has caused a shortage, and people are buying more eggs anticipating the price will continue to go up. Remember the early days of COVID-19 when everyone panic-bought toilet paper?
So far it's just Waffle House that's implementing a surcharge, but I expect other restaurants will follow with price increases, especially for diners who serve a lot of eggs. The bottom line is that if prices go up for businesses, they pass the cost onto their customers.

Egg prices are expected to keep rising.
Maybe it's time to buy a chicken coup? Egg prices could keep going up another 20% this year. It might make sense to have your own chickens at this point!
Limit to purchase eggs?

Some grocery stores are limiting the amount of eggs you can buy at the store. I see most of them limiting 2 cartons per customer.
