I stumbled on an article that talks about the best food you need to try from every state. I was expecting it would be something pretty Minnesota-based, like Tater Tot Hotdish, or maybe a nice pasty from your local church fundraiser.

I was a little surprised by what Delish picked for their article. I don't necessarily disagree, but I have my own suggestions I'll share in a little bit later on in this story.

Wild Blueberries?

Delish says everyone who visits Minnesota should try our wild blueberries. Really, that's the best they can come up with?

Don't get me wrong, blueberries are great. Growing up in Northern Minnesota, we picked blueberries right on the side of the road. (Raspberries and crab apples too.) I also learned that Minnesota declared the Blueberry Muffin the state muffin. I didn't know there was a category for that.

I think there are some other foods that should take a bigger priority in Minnesota.

How about Top The Tater?

It's Minnesota's chive and onion sour cream dip that just hits differently than anything else. There's nothing like it. You need to try Top The Tater when you're in Minnesota. By the way, it's best served with ripple chips.

What about tater tot hotdish?

Minnesota is the hotdish capital of the world, and nothing is more Minnesotan than Tater Tot Hotdish. And yes, it's hotdish, not casserole. Casseroles are for those folks down South.

Minnesota Wild Rice

I would even put wild rice from Minnesota above wild blueberries in terms of importance in the state. The best place to find good wild rice is a farmer's market or a stand on the side of the road. That's where you'll find the good stuff.

The Ten Commandments Of Top The Tater

'Top The Tater' is a staple for us here in the Midwest. I have never met a person who hasn't loved Top The Tater. However, there are people who don't understand the importance of how to eat it, and how to properly respect the little green container of joy.
