I need to take issue with this post, even though I'm writing part of it. I compliment women all the time, and have yet to be taken to task for it. I compliment men as well. I come form the generation where if one sees something stunning or unusually pleasing it's fine to compliment that person, providing it's sincere and done in good taste. Perhaps younger women either have yet to learn the fine art of accepting a compliment, or simply don't care what people think? Please take the poll at the end of this post. I'm interested in your feelings, and it only takes a few seconds.

Only half of women actually enjoy being praised and many others misinterpret well-meant words as offensive, according to new research.

And "you look well" is one of the worst things a man can say to a woman - because she just thinks it means she looks fat.

Other compliments likely to backfire include telling a woman that you like her make-up, or that her dress is figure hugging.
