The Hermantown Police is reminding the public via social to be bear aware this summer.

Residents in Superior learned last week that bears can and do wander into residential areas and while most bears are wary of people it's best to be cautious around bears because they may react unpredictably.

HPD says that "Some of the biggest things residents can do to help prevent bear problems are to secure garbage and consider not feeding birds in the summer."

The Minnesota DNR says you should NEVER approach or try to pet a bear, bears are big, strong and surprisingly fast so admire from a safe distance.

The DNR says that if a bear is a threat to public safety to call the police right away, for less urgent bear problems you can contact the DNR at 888-646-6367.
