Former Deep Purple vocalist David Coverdale formed Whitesnake in 1977, and while their albums were popular in Europe and Japan, they did little in America. Several years later in 1984, they released "Slide It In" which did quite well, and in 1987 released "1987" (in Europe)  which put Whitesnake over the top. The band at that point had sold over sis million copies in America alone.
