A former Madison East Wisconsin High School teacher has pleaded guilty to filming students undressing during field trips in Minnesota & Wisconsin. Thiry-nine-year old David M. Krutchen appeared in federal court on Monday, August 16. He had reached a plea deal with prosecutors by pleading guilty to two federal charges in Wisconsin, however he is still facing three counts of interfering with the privacy of a minor in the state of Minnesota.

Krutchen, of Cottage Grove, admits to wanting to see students undress during the field trips and had been setting up the cameras impulsively.  He was charged last year with multiple counts of attempting to produce child pornography. WMTV reports that he is accused of hiding recording devices in air fresheners sitting on bathroom shelves. There also was a recording device hidden in a smoke detector in the bathroom at shower height and facing the shower.

Kruchten was along on a field trip to Minneapolis with high school students in December of 2019. When one of the female students pressed a button to spray the air freshener, the device opened up and revealed the camera. He was arrested on Jan 30, 2019. He resigned from teaching the following month.

Federal defender Joseph Bugni who is Kruchten's attorny believed that his client would be conficted if the case went to a jury become of the manner the cameras were set in the room. The Wisconsin Law Journal reported that Kruchten initially said that he positioned the cameras in the bathrooms of students' hotel rooms out of curiosity to see what was going on. He did then admit he wanted to see students undress.

Kruchten will be sentenced in October where he faces 6 to 20 years for the charges he has pleaded guilty to. The Minnesota cases have yet to schedule court dates.
