We've been pretty spoiled with a mild start to the year. In fact it's been above freezing quite a bit, which has thrown a wrench in some of our normal winter activities. Last week when we were expecting 6-10" of snow, we instead got rain which cause outdoor ice rinks to close, sledding hills to become glare ice, and put off the snowmobile season inevitably. Ice thickness across area lakes is much less than average for this time of year. This week we will start to see a more normal January after having one of the warmest starts ever to the year.

The National Weather service posted a message early this morning showing that an upper level disturbance is moving through the Northland today. Our high temperatures should stay in the teens to low 20s. Then, tonight we could see temperatures dipping below zero for the first time in 2021.  Winds will be about 5-10 miles per hour, which will bring the wind chills down to -23 below zero, depending on what the air temperature is where you are at.

Tuesday temperatures will stay in the teens, then we have a slight warm up coming Wednesday into Thursday. Heading back into this weekend, however temperatures drop again below zero overnight, with highs in the teens to 20s.

A slight chance of snow is coming on Wednesday, but nothing major at this point. There was a dusting to start off the week, but we are in desperate need of snow for winter activities across the Northland.
