The AT&T communications tower is not being used anymore and the company would like to remove it. This requires some changes in traffic in downtown Duluth. I know many people who use the YMCA will want to know the traffic and sidewalk patterns to be used during this whole process.

The City of Duluth is informing the public of the closure of West First Street starting tomorrow, May 14, 2014, at 6:00 AM. Work is being done to remove the AT&T communications tower which requires the temporary installation of large, heavy equipment on the block between 3rd and 4th Ave West in downtown Duluth.

The work will require the closure of West First St. between 3rd and 4th Ave West for up to 4 weeks, starting May 14, though project completion which may fluctuate depending on weather. All parties are committed to completing the work as quickly as possible with minimal interruption to nearby businesses.

Viant Crane, the subcontractor, along with the City of Duluth and the Greater Downtown Council are working directly with impacted businesses to ensure services continue and access is allowed during normal business hours. Special accommodations have been made to allow delivery services, handicap parking, regular business access, and other required accommodations. Throughout this project, sidewalks on the upper side will be open to pedestrian traffic but sidewalks on the lower side will be closed. Access to the YMCA will remain open.

The city asks that you contact Daniel Fanning, City of Duluth, at (218) 730-5307 or Nick Minardi, Viant Crane – Director of Operations, at (218) 591-6339 with any questions or concerns.
