    UMD National Champions

    The University of Minnesota - Duluth won their first National Championship in 2011 for Men's Hockey. They beat Michigan 3-2 in overtime when Hermantown native Kyle Schmidt scored the game winning goal at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul in front of over 19,000 people in attendance.

    Grandma's Marathon

    One of the biggest marathons in the country seems to make national news every year. Grandma's Marathon started in 1977 with only 150 participants and has grown to an event that has over 18,000 runners every year.

    Mayor Jumps In Lake For Internet

    When former Duluth Mayor Don Ness did a polar plunge to try to gain traction in the competition for Google Fiber back in 2011, it made national headlines. Eventually Google chose Kansas City for the fiber expansion.
