UMD National Champions
The University of Minnesota - Duluth won their first National Championship in 2011 for Men's Hockey. They beat Michigan 3-2 in overtime when Hermantown native Kyle Schmidt scored the game winning goal at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul in front of over 19,000 people in attendance.

One of the biggest marathons in the country seems to make national news every year. Grandma's Marathon started in 1977 with only 150 participants and has grown to an event that has over 18,000 runners every year.
