Where You Can Catch a Glimpse of a Wild Moose in Minnesota

A goal that I have in my life is to one day see a moose in the wild. It would be the coolest thing, and it's something on my bucket list. And while Minnesota doesn't have a ton of moose anymore, there's still a chance!

And there's an even better chance at one particular spot in the state.

Are There Wild Moose in Minnesota

As of 2025, the moose population in Minnesota is around 4,040. The Minnesota DNR reports that the moose population has been "relatively stable" now for almost a decade, which is great news!

But where can you find these moose?

The Best Place to See a Wild Moose in Minnesota

Your best option for seeing a wild moose in Minnesota, according to Visit Cook County, is the Gunflint Trail National Scenic Byway in Grand Marais. It's 57 miles long and "traverses the heart of moose country."

An even better chance of seeing a moose is when you're NOT in a car, though (makes sense). In that case, Odyssey Resorts recommends checking out the moose viewing trail and platform off the Gunflint Trail.

Here are the directions they give:

• Follow Gunflint Trail (aka County Road 12) from the center of Grand Marais.
• Drive about 24 miles north.
• Parking is on the left side of the road, opposite FR 316.
• "Hike down the snowmobile trail northwest for 1/4 mile to a narrow path that leads off to the right to the viewing platform. Note that you will pass a closed road on the way."

How to Give Yourself the Best Odds of Seeing a Wild Moose

Just because you're in the right spot doesn't mean you're guaranteed to see a moose. If you want a better chance, going at dawn or dusk is your best bet. Also, make sure you're looking in swampy or shaded areas, that's where they like to hang out.

Bringing binoculars also isn't a bad idea since you definitely need to keep your distance from these big guys. They can spook easily and can also charge, so be careful.

Patience is also key. You may need to hang out in a spot for a little while to see a moose wander by.

Other Places to See Wild Moose in Minnesota

On top of Gunflint Trail, Voyageurs National Park in northern Minnesota and Hayes Lake State Park in northwestern Minnesota are both great spots, too.
