
Minnesota’s 6 Famous Nicknames: The Stories You Didn’t Know
Ask a Minnesotan what the nickname is for our state and there is a good chance you'll hear a few different answers. I asked that question on my radio show today on Y-105FM and got 6 different answers from my fans. I listed those below so you could see them - there might even be a few that are new to you!
Thanks to the data pulled in by Spokeo, we now know the official nickname for the great state of Minnesota.

Minnesota’s Famous Nickname: The Story You Didn’t Know
Every state is known for something. And usually that "something" corresponds to its nickname.
For example, Wisconsin is the largest cheese producer in America. As a result of all of the dairy cows and farms throughout the state helping make that cheese happen, the nickname "America's Dairyland" was chosen. It should be "the Kwik Trip State"...but whatever.
As an Iowa State University alum, the nickname for Iowa hurts and in my opinion, does NOT fully represent what the state is known for. For those of us who are Cyclones, you'll understand when you scroll through the list below and see what was picked.

Do You Know All 6 Of These Nicknames for the State of Minnesota?
According to State Symbols USA, the state of Minnesota has quite a few fun nicknames. And in their opinion, the Land of 10,000 Lakes is not the official nickname for our home. Nope, they are saying the official nickname is actually the first one on this list:
- The North Star State – Official state motto ("L'Étoile du Nord" in French)
- The Land of 10,000 Lakes – we learned above that there are officially over 14,000 lakes in our state
- The Gopher State – A political cartoon from 1858 helped spur this nickname. Today, it is associated with the University of Minnesota's mascot
- The State of Hockey – according to The Sporting News, no one produces hockey players like the state of Minnesota. Our fans are also pretty epic!
- The Bread and Butter State – Minnesota was once a major producer of flour and dairy products
- The L'Étoile du Nord State – means "The North Star State" and was a nod to when Minnesota was the most northernmost state in the union.
