Have you noticed more options for license plates on Minnesota roads? It seems the traditional Minnesota license plate, you know the one with the blue border and 10,000 lakes across the bottom, has somewhat fallen out of favor with Minnesotans behind the wheel.

Minnesota Has Over 120 License Plate Options

The State of Minnesota offers motorists more than 120 different license plate options, including the standard plate, Critical Habitat plates, collegiate plates, etc. With so many options available, tracking the popularity of different plates has become a thing, and recently, a Twin Cities television channel looked at the data from the last two years and determined both the most popular plate being ordered as well as the least popular.

Most Popular Minnesota License Plate Over The Last Two Years

The blackout license plate has been Minnesota's most popular plate over the last two years, with more than 190,000 plates being ordered between 2024 and 2025. As of the end of 2025, there were slightly more than 415,000 vehicles in Minnesota with the special black license plates on Minnesota roads.

Following the blackout plates, the most popular were the 100 club license plate, and then the blackout personalized plates. (I did not count temporary plates or trailer license plates)

Least Popular Minnesota License Plate Over The Last Two Years

When you look at just the change in license plate orders over the last two years, one plate stood out amongst the other options. One of the reasons it stood out as it is the most common on the road still, but its popularity seems to be waning. The standard Minnesota license plate saw the biggest drop, with 174,000 fewer plates being attached to Minnesota vehicles.

Even with 174,000+ fewer plates being ordered, the standard plate still had the largest share of the road with more than 5 million vehicles sporting the traditional plate.

Following the standard plate, motorcycle plates saw a 10,600 reduction in orders, personalized standard plates saw a 8,000 plate decrease, and the support our troops plates saw a reduction of 3,500.

Kevin Williams Career As A Minnesota Viking

Kevin Williams was announced as one of the 15 finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, class of 2026 this morning. After being drafted 9th overall in 2003 for the Minnesota Vikings he spent the next 10 years with the organization, amassing over 171 regular-season games played for the Vikings and totaling 465 tackles, five interceptions, 60 sacks, 84 QB hits, 104 tackles for loss, seven forced fumbles, 13 fumble recoveries, and 68 passes defensed. Williams scored four defensive touchdowns for Minnesota. Two were interceptions returns and two fumble recoveries.

6 Photos You Won't Believe Were Taken In Minnesota

After having spent the greater part of the last three weeks outside Minnesota, it has been great to be back. We live in a very beautiful part of the country. From the North Shore's jagged cliffs to the rolling croplands of southern Minnesota and to the driftless area near Preston, our state is filled with beautiful sights. I managed to find 6 photos that were taken right here in Minnesota, but when you look at them, you'd think they were taken somewhere else completely. Let's enjoy the land of 10,000 photos, shall we?
