It’s Official! Iconic Minnesota Malt Shoppe Is Now Open For The Season

We are now well into spring in Minnesota, and a lot of things we look forward to during this season have already happened, or will be happening soon.

For example, ValleyFair will officially open for the season on Sunday, May 11. In Northern Minnesota, similar signs of the season have already happened.

The popular Dairy Queen in West Duluth opened for the season in early March, then on March 20, the first day of spring, Gordy's Hi Hat opened in Cloquet.

As great as these signs of spring are, there was still one place that had yet to open for the year, and ice cream lovers were starting to get a bit concerned. Thankfully, any fears that it would not open have been put to rest.

Iconic Malt Shoppe Is Now Open In Minnesota

The official word arrived through a Facebook post on May 1 that the Portland Malt Shoppe in Duluth had opened for the summer season at 716 E. Superior Street.

The Portland Malt Shoppe is extremely popular with residents and tourists alike, serving delicious malts and ice cream treats from its beautiful location that offers an amazing view of Lake Superior.

According to its website, the building that now houses the Portland Malt Shoppe was built in 1921 as a gas station for Northwestern Oil Company.

Harry and Edith Rogers managed the gas station for many years. In the 1970s, the building was purchased for a small dress boutique called the Portland Village. Following tradition, when the current owners purchased the building in 1989, it became the Portland Malt Shoppe.

You'd be hard pressed to find a better malt, shake, float, sundae, or ice cream cone in Minnesota, so even if there's a line when you arrive, it's worth it.

The Portland Malt Shoppe is open now through Sunday, September 28, during the following hours:

• May 1 - May 18: From 11 am to 8 pm, Sunday - Saturday
• May 19 - June 5: From 11 am to 9 pm, Sunday - Saturday
• June 6 - August 16: From 11 am to 10 pm, Sunday - Saturday
• August 17 - August 31: From 11 am to 9 pm, Sunday - Saturday
• September 2 - September 27: From 11 am to 8 pm, Sunday - Saturday
• Sunday, September 28: From 11 am to 6 pm

Please note that the Portland Malt Shoppe will be closed on Labor Day, Monday, September 1.
