Old Farmer's Almanac Methodology

The Old Farmer's Almanac uses the average dates of the first light freeze for fall in locations in the United States and Canada. You can enter the zipcode to find the nearest weather station, and it will give you your data. To make things easier, I've selected 10 cities from different parts of Minnesota to give you an idea.

A light freeze occurs when the low temperature is between 29 and 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Tender plants can be killed at those temperatures. A moderate freeze is between 25 and 28 degrees, and a severe freeze is 24 degrees and colder. For the first frost dates, the Old Farmer's Almanac uses the light freeze temperatures.
