Northland motorists have come to expect slowed travel and delays more times than not when traveling near the Twin Ports Interchange Project.

The $435 million project requires crews to work year-round as they reconstruct the I-35/I-535/Hwy 53 interchange. However, construction-related delays can be worse at certain points, especially when new lane closures are in place.

Unfortunately, this week will bring new lane closures, but the good news is that it's for a relatively short amount of time.

MnDOT Announces New Lane Closures This Week

The Minnesota Department of Transportation has single-lane closures on I-35 through the Twin Ports Interchange project in Duluth.

The closures began Monday morning and motorists will encounter left lane closures in both directions through 6 p.m. on Wednesday, August 7.

These closures are needed for continuing construction activities and will take place between 27th Avenue West and Garfield Avenue. Motorists are urged to drive without distractions, be patient, and be mindful of work crews on the road.

The Twin Ports Interchange Project looks to improve safety by:

  • Providing a new conventional design
  • Relocating all exits and entrances to the right side of the roadway
  • Improving merging sight distance and eliminating merge conflicts
  • Eliminating weaving problems near the interchange
  • Providing lane continuity for through I-35 traffic
