Driving Wisconsin Ice Highway Across Lake Saves Locals 45 Minutes
Would you drive all the way across a frozen lake to save 45 minutes off your commute? The weather has been favorable for making solid ice this year in Wisconsin. Once it's thick enough, volunteers at a Wisconsin lake start building a road across the lake.
NBC 26 shared the story on their YouTube page and it had me wondering how crazy this must look to people from outside the Midwest.
This happens at Lake Winnebago in Wisconsin. The road takes people from Merrit Avenue in Oshkosh, Wisconsin across Lake Winnebago to Quinney Wisconsin.
The road is maintained by volunteers with the West Shore Fishing Club. They post updates to their Facebook page about conditions, areas to avoid, and other notices. They place ice bridges out where needed on the lake.
They also clearly mark weak spots on the ice that they have found.
They are a nonprofit group that relies on memberships and donations to fund the work that goes into making the lake safe for travelers.
Would you take the ice road to save some time? Lots of people on the internet seem to think it isn't safe, and comments like, I'll take my 45 minutes vs chances of death.

This isn't the only place to have ice roads. Much further north in Minnesota, there is an ice road that goes to the Northwest Angle. When conditions allow, there is also an ice road to Madeline Island in Bayfield, Wisconsin.
