‘Mega Maintenance’ Project To Close 6 Miles Of Major Highway In Minnesota
It may feel like summer is getting close to hitting the home stretch, but that doesn't mean that road construction projects are close to winding down in Minnesota.
That shouldn't come as a big surprise since earlier this year, the Minnesota Department of Transportation announced it had nearly 180 road and bridge projects lined up this season, plus an additional 51 projects designed to improve airports, water ports, railroad crossings, and transit infrastructure.
Now, as August approaches, the Minnesota Department of Transportation is warning motorists to be prepared for a large section of a major highway to be closed for several days.
MnDOT Announces Closure Of Section Of Interstate 694
According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, more than six miles of eastbound Interstate 694 will close beginning at 10 p.m. on Friday, August 1, between Shingle Creek Parkway in Brooklyn Center and Snelling Avenue in Arden Hills.
MnDOT will close the eastbound interstate for intensive maintenance activities through 5 a.m. on Monday, August 4.
Motorists should be prepared for all ramps to and from the interstate along eastbound I-694 to be closed starting at 7 p.m. Friday, and there will also be no access to the eastbound interstate from cross streets in the project area.

Simultaneously, the ramps from northbound and southbound I-35W to eastbound I-694 will close, and drivers are encouraged to use Highway 36 and I-35E to reach eastbound I-694.
Access from southbound I-35W and the eastbound Highway 10 diagonal to Snelling Avenue and the eastbound interstate will remain open in Arden Hills.

As for a detour route during the eastbound I-694 closure, motorists can detour north on Highway 169, east on Highway 610 and Highway 10, and then south on I-35W to the Highway 10 diagonal to reach the eastbound interstate. Drivers may also travel east on I-94 from the west end of the closure to reach Minneapolis.
Why Is This Closure Necessary?
MnDOT says the weekend closure is needed so that multiple MnDOT maintenance crews can have the time needed to:
- Inspect and repair bridge decks
- Repair and restripe pavement
- Clean and repair storm sewer drainage structures
- Remove vegetation
- Repair and replace lighting
- Remove graffiti on bridges and walls

In addition, crews will survey drainage structures, bridges, and signage and take pavement cores and soil samples to prepare for a future project currently planned in 2032.
