Now that spring is here, road construction season has officially begun throughout Minnesota. While this is a good thing because improved infrastructure is important, it can create frustrating conditions for motorists.

Recently, the Minnesota Department of Transportation announced it had approved nearly 180 road and bridge projects for the 2025 season, plus an additional 51 projects designed to improve airports, water ports, railroad crossings, and transit infrastructure.

So, it's safe to assume that as you drive through Minnesota, whether it's in your hometown or road tripping, you're bound to encounter some sort of road construction.

Thankfully, MnDOT generally does a great job updating motorists on when projects are taking place and what delays or detours might be encountered.

MnDOT Announces Closure Of A Section Of Interstate 35

The Minnesota Department of Transportation announced this week that crews will be closing both directions of Interstate 35W between the I-35/35W/35E split in Burnsville and I-494 in Bloomington. The closure is necessary to complete the removal of two bridges.

Thankfully, the project is not expected to impact Friday rush hour traffic. MnDOT says that beginning 9 p.m. on Friday, April 25, I-35W will be closed at the I-35/35W/35E split in Burnsville and I-494 in Bloomington so crews can take down Burnsville Parkway and Highway 13 bridges over I-35W.

Motorists should follow the signed detour using I-35E to Highway 77 to I-494. The construction will also impact the southern portion of the E-ZPass lanes. This means there won’t be an E-ZPass-specific lane or option through the construction zone.

This work should be completed, and I-35 should be reopened to two lanes in each direction by 6 a.m. on Monday, April 28.

Also, Cliff Road under I-35 will be closed at 9:00 p.m. on April 25 and will remain closed until October 2026. Detours will be in place.

Motorists Will Also Encounter Extended Ramp Closures

There are also several ramp closures in place within the I-35W Burnsville project construction area, and they will be in place for the entire duration of the project.

When crews close the section of I-35 on April 25, they will also close the ramp from Cliff Road to southbound I-35W. Detour signs will be posted guiding motorists from both the west side and the east side of I-35.

That ramp will remain closed through the winter.

MnDOT urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution, and slow down in work zones where workers are present. Remember, in Minnesota, fines for speeding in work zones are $300.
